I believe that Biology is our Future

Life created much of the Earth as we know it, and holds the key to creating a sustainable environment for all our tomorrows.  As we begin to unravel the extreme potential of biotechnology, we can imagine a world with less disease, more sustainable and healthy food, rapid and effective healthcare, and long-term sustainability of our environment.

Transformative discoveries in the life sciences, together with massively increased speed and sensitivity of life science methods, are creating the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives:

• Advancements in genetic engineering such as gene editing, CRISPR-Cas9, and synthetic biology create new possibilities for manipulating the genetic material of organisms, enabling the development of novel products and solutions. 

• Advanced technologies such as gene and cell-based therapies, targeted cancer treatments, and novel vaccines will enable more effective treatment and improved quality of life for patients.

• The capacity to enhance crop productivity, increase nutritional value, and improve resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses create enormous opportunity to improve agricultural output to feed the ever-expanding human population with universal nutritious and sustainable produce. 

• Biofuels derived from organic materials like plant biomass, algae, and agricultural waste have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease reliance on fossil fuels, and mitigate climate change. Biomanufacturing of primary materials can free us from narrow supply chains that rely on petrochemicals generated from fossil fuels.

• Solutions for environmental challenges such as pollution cleanup, waste management, and conservation include microbial bioremediation to degrade harmful pollutants, or genetically engineered microorganisms designed to break down plastics and other non-biodegradable materials.

• The development and commercialization of biotechnological products require a skilled workforce, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and creating thousands of skilled, hard-to-automate jobs to support a thriving innovation economy fit for the modern age.
